Carson City Culture & Tourism Authority

Learn about the historic and scenic region at the Carson City Culture & Tourism Authority, which is the perfect starting point for your local exploration and adventures. Find out about timely events of interest, and pick up brochures and maps to learn more about topics and places that interest you. Staff will offer friendly advice and tips about hidden gems in the area. The office features souvenirs, T-shirts, artwork, and other items for sale.

The tourism office is located near museums, restaurants, and retailers, making it an ideal spot for tourists to visit. It's located at 716 N. Carson St. and is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Kit Carson Trail

Explore historic neighborhoods along the Kit Carson Trail, following a painted blue line for 2.5 miles. Check out almost 50 historic sites that tell the story of Carson City, including Victorian homes, churches, and museums. Stops along the way include the Nevada State Museum which housed in the former U.S. Mint and has been a museum since 1939. Several historic homes and mansions along the path lead visitors to the Governor's Mansion.

St. Peter's Episcopal Church and Rectory and nearby First United Methodist Church date back to the 1860s. The Brewery Arts Center is located in the 1865 Carson Brewing Company building. Stroll by a historic hotel and other early commercial buildings as you complete the loop.

Nevada State Capitol Building

Next to the Kit Carson Trail and Carson City's West Side Historic District, the State Capitol offers self-guided tours of the building, as well as Battle Born Hall. Built in 1870 and finished in 1871, the Capitol's silver dome and Alaskan marble highlights are iconic. The south wing of the building features Battle Born Hall on the second floor. Battle Born Hall opened in 2018, showcasing Nevada's path to statehood.

Self-guided tours are available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays. While you're visiting the Capitol, be sure to stroll around the campus of state buildings that include the Nevada State Legislature, Nevada Supreme Court, and Nevada State Library, Archives, and Public Records.

Chimney Beach

This stretch of sandy shores on Lake Tahoe is located within a national forest and is open from Memorial Day through October. Chimney Beach is a rustic and somewhat challenging hike, but the views of Lake Tahoe are pristine. While there aren't picnic tables at the beach, it's a perfect place to carry in a picnic basket. You will find public restrooms available in the parking lot. While you're there, look for the namesake chimney, a remnant of a caretaker's cabin. Chimney Beach is popular with locals and tourists alike.

Bowers Mansion Regional Park

Just up the road in New Washoe City is Bowers Mansion Regional Park, which offers free admission to the grounds. This park is on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada mountains, featuring a mix of sunny and shady picnic spaces and playgrounds. The swimming pool and tours of the 1864 Bowers Mansion have nominal fees. The park hosts special events like free concerts and performances and an outdoor escape room riddle-solving adventure. Except for service animals, pets aren't permitted at this historic location.

Kings Canyon Waterfall

This 25-foot waterfall, a quarter-mile walk down a trail loop that provides nature views and bird watching from April until October, is located just outside of downtown Carson City. The cascading Kings Canyon Waterfall is connected to 3 miles of trails for additional exploring opportunities. It's a lovely relaxing destination that offers fantastic views, picnic opportunities, and splashing in the cool water.

Carson Nugget

The casino and hotel, which opened in 1954, is the oldest continually operating casino in the city. The 30,000 square foot facility offers slots, table games, and keno, plus fine dining and a calendar of entertainment options. The Carson Nugget provides a chance to check out over 550 slot machines and other entertainment options. The casino is next to many other tourist hotspots like restaurants and shopping areas, so it's an ideal sight-seeing stop for those who gamble and those who prefer just to pass through and check out the views.

Fuji Park

This 14-acre park hosts events and features a playground, picnic tables, and heated restroom facilities on an area of large trees and a natural creek. The park is open year-round. Fuji Park also has an off-leash dog park that was recently added to the park's west end. Pets are permitted as long as they're on a leash in areas other than the dog park. Fuji Park is also near the Carson City Fairgrounds and Baily Fishing Pond, located at 601 Old Clear Creek Road.

Mills Park

Mills Park is a 51-acre park with tennis, sand volleyball courts, a skate park, a miniature railroad, and open grassy areas. Families can also set up picnics and grill out. You can also find exercise stations, a playground, and restroom facilities. The skateboard park is open for skateboard and rollerblade users from dawn to dusk. There's also an open-air covered pavilion that hosts concerts, farmers markets, craft fairs, and more. Mills Park is located at 1111 E. Williams St., next door to the Carson City Community Center and Aquatic Facility.
